They say not to judge a book by its cover, but this one was too beautiful to not pick out - I admit, I was already interested due to Acevado's other novel, The Poet X (which was a beautiful masterpiece), but I was sold on this after the blurb. There was a lot of focus on Emoni's culinary skills, and let me tell you, I could literally taste the food she was describing - Acevado blew me away with her astounding ability to describe even something as insignificant as a little clove to an incredible effect. The book also gave good insight into the Latinx culture and the way that Emoni handled being a mother at such a young age, with her whole career still hanging precariously. The love interest, Malachi, was sweet and endearing, but there wasn't as much focus on him as there was on Emoni's cooking - her food meant so much to her, and she essentially poured a little bit of herself into each meal.
Beautiful, uplifting and hopeful. A fantastic read. Elizabeth Acevado did it again.
