This book is a celebration of unconventional motherhood. It’s a celebration of love, it’s a celebration of finding happiness even when life isn’t following the course you expected it to, and it’s a celebration of passion in all forms. ⁣⁣
⁣⁣
Elizabeth Acevedo uses beautiful, lyrical prose and fun recipes at the start of chapters to lure you in, but you stay because of the meaningful story. You end up admiring Emoni for her dedication to her daughter, to her ‘Buela and to herself. The story pulls you in all directions; every character has their ups and their downs. ⁣⁣

The difficulties of early pregnancies and teen pregnancies isn’t glamourised or glorified; the hardships are made plain and clear. The ricocheting effect is shown not only on the parents of the child, but the entire family. It’s refreshing and honest in it’s approach to teenage motherhood. It touches on themes of feminism, on possessiveness in love. It’s soft in its approach to themes that can be hard and negative in essence
