I was rather surprised by how much I enjoyed this book. I could hardly be more different to the character giving us her views on life - different age, different country, different life experience. And yet Emoni had all my sympathy from very early on. It's always easy to relate to a character who lives life with a passion, zest and purpose.

Emoni isn't the only stong character. The love Emoni has for her grandmother, daughter and friend Angelica are touching and her relationships with Julio and Malachi develop some depth as the story moves along. Emoni herself achieves considerable self-knowledge and makes conscious decisions for her future. The difficulties and joys of becoming a mother at the age of fifteen are shown with sensitivity and understanding.

I got a rather lost in places due to my little understanding of the US academic system, my lack of Spanish and my ignorance of Puerto Rican foods and ingredients. I weathered through but really would have appreciated a glossary of terms and definitely some more recipes from Elizabeth Acevedo.
