The opening of this novel is a heart-warming recipe, which beautifully sets the tone for a young female narrator struggling with her culture and a young baby of her own. The narrative voice of Emoni makes her a likeable character and right from the start, I wanted the best for her. Character relationships are each different but all shown with both humour and empathy, which just endears Emoni and her situation to the reader even more.
Structurally, the chapters are quite short and clearly presented, which made reading this novel easy and not a chore, especially with the enjoyment and emotions of the story itself.
If you are a fan of coming-of-age tales with a little something extra (in this case, a little humour and heart-warming cultural references, as well as the added bonus of useful recipes!) then this is definitely a must read for you!
