With the Fire on High by Elizabeth Acevendo.

What a wonderfully uplifting story by Elizabeth Acevendo. Emoni’s story is one that I could wholeheartedly believe. Becoming pregnant in her teens, and then feeling all the responsibilities and pressures that come with motherhood and still being at school.

I love the passion Emoni has for her daughter, but also for her dream of becoming a chef. This story highlights that becoming a mother doesn’t mean you have to give up on your dreams, rather embrace motherhood and pursue life as well. I feel this is a really good message to portray to teens who may be reading this book, allowing people to believe that they can do something with their lives, even though they are a young mum.

I also loved the sense of family and community in this book, Emoni had a good support system which I wish every young mum had.

I really loved this book and couldn’t put it down. Its first impression for me was bang on, I thought before I read it that it would be a great novel.
