This is a book about Emoni, a 17 year old Afro-Latina who has a 2 years old daughter. The book is written by Elizabeth Acevedo, who also wrote “clap when you land” and “poet x”. The book starts with Emoni’s “When Life Gives You Lemon, Make Lemon Verbena Tenbeque” recipe. I think this was a unique and fun way of starting the book. It showed the reader a bit of the main characters personality, by showing her passion for cooking.
The introduction was amazing. It started fast paced, simple and introduced Emma( the daughter) and Emoni’s grandmother, who she calles Buela.
The book is written simple and kind of lyrical, the language is easy to understand and the plot is easy to follow. I think this is a feel good book that shows a strong woman lead that goes to school, works and takes care of her baby girl.
We also get to know important characters in the book such as the grandmother, Emma, Tyrone which is the baby daddy and Emoni’s best friend. I give this book 5 stars and I look forward to reading the rest.
