A sprinkle of strong female representation with a dash of cute highschool love, you've got yourself a good book.

With The Fire On High is a heartwarming story about being a young mother, but still remembering you are a person with dreams & aspirations and being a parent doesn't change that.
The story follows Emoni, now seventeen years old, raising her 2 year old daughter Emma. Emoni is a great representation of not just young mothers, but young women in general. While she has flaws like any other person, she is a hard worker and wants the best for her child, even if that means sacrificing what she wants herself. Her selflessness and love makes you want to root for her.

This book is filled with positive representation, from LatinX to African American to LGBT, but the story wasn't defined by those things. They were aspects that helped to flesh out these characters and this world, but the storyline was still powerful enough to stand on its own.

One thing I found while reading was the way the chapters were spaced irked me a little. Some chapters were only 2 or 3 pages and it seemed unnecessary to put it under it's own chapter heading, because it broke the pace of the story at times. However, this was a minor inconvenience and it certainly wasn't enough to make this book less enjoyable.

Overall, I really enjoyed my time reading With The Fire On High. It's a feel good story that makes you think anyone can achieve their goals, no matter what route they take to get there.
