With The Fire on High was a fun and very quick book that I flew through, devouring it in just a few days. The main character Emoni was very likeable, but equally flawed and real, and Elizabeth Acevedo writes in such a beautiful way. From her first novel The Poet X to Clap When You Land, you can really see how far she has come as a writer, and I'm only excited to see where her writing goes next.

The chapters in this book are very short, and so this very much helps the pace of reading as you keep wanting to read more as the chapters are only a few pages long. I loved the integration of Emoni's recipes as she is a budding chef, it definitely made my mouth water while I was reading this book. I thought all of the topics discussed in this book and difficult moments that only strengthened Emoni's character were handled well. I can't wait to read anything that Elizabeth Acevedo writes next. I'd thoroughly recommend!
