With The Fire On High is about an American teenager, Emoni, from "the hood" who has a baby girl, Emma, and a natural talent for cooking. The story begins on Emoni and Emma's first days of the school year, Emoni in high school, and Emma starting daycare.

The story manages to instantly throw you into Emoni's daily life as a young mum still at school, and from the very start gives you an idea of the hardships she faces, which although are a bit cliche, the writing seems self-aware. The introduction to her love of cooking conjure's up mental smells and tastes that makes the book feel cosy and like you are in Emoni's kitchen with her. Although the descriptive imagery is enticing, some of the dialogue is a bit flat and the writing style is is quite simplistic which made me want to skip to the next chapter on occasion. With an idea of the premise I would be instersted to see where the rest of the story takes me.
