I can see why Elizabeth Acevedo has won such prestigious awards for her writing.
This YA novel is beautifully written. There is lots of humour and American slang which will appeal to teenagers and also lots of irony and received wisdom which I, as an older reader, appreciated.
Despite her situation as a seventeen year old, mixed race, single mother, Emoni, is a lovely, feisty, character who the reader really feels for. Her passion is for cooking, especially innovative recipes with unusual spices.
She loves and her daughter, Emma, who she , rather annoyingly refers to as Babygirl throughout the whole book.
I don't particularly like the cover of this book which shows a haughty young girl with a disdainful look - not at all how I imagine Emoni after reading the book.
