I was drawn to this book first of all by the author, as I devoured The Poet X by Elizabeth Acevedo and I knew that I would read anything and everything she wrote after that stunning debut. The cover also really reeled me in as the artwork is beautiful, the colours are amazing, and it's so wonderful to see a black woman on the cover of a YA book! This was a powerful story about Emoni, who is a teen mother and a food enthusiast, and the recipes and descriptions of food that filled these pages were absolutely divine! Acevedo has a talent for lyrical writing, even when writing prose, that pulls the reader into the story, and she is also very adept at creating fully realised characters - Emoni is not a flat cardboard cutout, but felt more like a real person between the pages.
