With The Fire On High tells the story of Emoni, a teenage mum, completing school while holding down a job and looking after her child. The story revolves around how she balances this while also struggling with plans for her future, torn between what is best (in the most practical of senses) for her family and what's best for her (in a more holistic sense).
While this could become a story just about struggle, it manages to capture perfectly the excitement of being at an age where there possibility and opportunity open up before you. There is conflict, which is entirely believable, and the way in which it is written will speak to a number of young people.
I've given this 5 stars as a young adult fiction book, it is written in a way that would be eaten up by younger readers and the way in which the book is laid out and presented is also perfectly suited to a younger audience.
