Fun, quirky, but a little basic
This was such a fun and easy read, and a book based around food is already a winner for me. The story follows a young mother called Emoni. Emoni lives with her 'buela, who helps to look after her child whilst Emoni is at school or working at the burger restaurant. We go on a journey with Emoni: we see friendships blossom, her cooking skills excel, and I think we also see her come into her own throughout the story.
It was a simple premise of a story, but a nice, heartwarming one. It covers themes of friendship and family with a lighthearted touch, yet still with depth and emotion. This is a YA novel which is perhaps why I found it a little basic and even a little cringe at times, but if you're looking for a quick read then this is definitely a fab choice.
