Within the first 10 pages, this book was empowering. We're given a young girl with a two year old daughter, who at first seems to be taking on the role of a mother, however, when Emori leaves the house and joins her friend Angelica, she becomes almost another person. The depth to her character is already apparent, as we see two sides to her within the first 25 or so pages in this sample, the mature and doting mother, and the regular high school teenager. It's refreshing to see that represented in a novel, and the smattering of Spanish and Latinx culture makes this novel all the more interesting. This novel makes the Latinx culture available to those of us in parts of the world who may never have experienced it, and lets us see the inner workings of the life of a teen mom.
