This is a heartwarming tale of a young teenage mum in America who against all odds is bringing up her daughter whilst maintaining a job to help her struggling abuela and going to school. I found myself developing an instant ‘relationship’ with the characters in With the Fire on High, and I was rooting for Emoni to follow her dreams right from the start of the novel, I found myself worrying about Abuelas health and at times I wanted to shake little Emma’s paternal grandmother and yell at her that Emoni was doing her very best! There are recipes dotted throughout the book and I’m so tempted to give some of them a go and get to experience yet another part of Emonis life outside of this heartwarming story.
