With the Fire on High is a YA contemporary that tackles important subjects such as teen pregnancy, race and poverty whilst also being fun and uplifting.

The story is about Emoni, who is juggling the pressures of being a teenage mum in high school with the pressures of her home life, where she lives were her grandmother and daughter and has to work part time to survive.

Emoni’s true passion though is for cooking and when her school offers a culinary arts class, she is thrilled at the chance to learn more about what she loves!

The cast of vibrant and colourful characters are easy to like and root for and the short chapters, interspersed with Emoni’s recipes, make this a quick and fun read. But boy did it make me hungry 😂😂

The one thing I wish I could change about this book, is that some of the storylines were not detailed enough. I felt that a lot of them were covered at surface level only and I really wanted to know more. Maybe I’m expecting too much, but it felt that there were additional storylines mentioned but not really explored in the way I would have wanted. A good example would be Emoni’s Puerto Rican heritage. This is talked about in parts, through her father and grandmother, but I would have loved more.

Overall I enjoyed the book and the unique recipes featured. Worth a read especially if you love food 😂
