“We are all authors of our own lives”
Set in Philadelphia, this novel follows the life of Emoni Santiago, a High School student with a pre-school daughter struggling to make ends meet. Thanks to an inspirational teacher, Emoni is encouraged to stay in school to further her education and to be the author of her own life. For Emoni education will be the key to escape a life of grinding poverty and single. parenthood. Emoni is a gifted cook and it is through food, that her creativity comes to life.
I really enjoyed this book. I’ve read books by the author Elizabeth Acevedo before and always feels she portrays a real sense of place in her writing. While this book may ostensibly be written for a YA audience, it’s also one of those rare books that can crossover to a mainstream market. I enjoyed the colloquial style of the narrative also which makes the story flow.
Overall a very promising and enjoy read.
