Emoni Santiago’s life revolves around her beautiful baby girl and her Abuela. Emoni is a young mother still in school who dreams of working as a chef when she graduates. She has to make tough decisions all the time and always keeps her daughter and her Abuela at the forefront of her decisions. Emoni has a lot of responsibilities to bear. So the only time Emoni feels like she can truly let go is in the kitchen, where everything she cooks turns into something truly magical.
This story covers a number of important themes such as young motherhood, relationships, poverty, education, family, friendship, future careers and so much more. I loved reading about Emoni’s culture and her cooking. I so badly wanted to taste the rich and vibrant dishes that Emoni had cooked!
Emoni herself was a very likeable and relatable character throughout the book, she is truly an amazing mother doing her best for her daughter and for her Abuela. I loved reading about Emoni’s friendships and her relationship with her Abuela. During the story Emoni faces a number of struggles and Emoni pushes through these in the best way she knows possible. Emoni is a strong character and hopefully will be an inspiration to readers. To me the plot was unpredictable, I had no idea what was going to happen to Emoni next and author’s style of writing ensured that the story flowed perfectly. After reading this book I am keen to read more from this author.
I love the vibrant cover of the book, it’s definitely in keeping with the story. I would have definitely picked this book up off the shelf. Overall, ‘With the fire on high’ was an uplifting story and well-paced throughout. I highly recommend it to young adult readers.
