Elizabeth Acevedo’s writing is poetically beautiful. The words flow so perfectly and with such ease.
This novel follows Emoni’s struggles as a teen mum who is having to choose between her duties and her dreams of being a chef. There is a discussion about heritage and race that is poignant and important, as well as a commentary upon socio-economic status that is equally as important and handled sensitively but unflinchingly.
The characters are realistic and layered, particularly the main characters, but also the side characters, especially the teachers.
Also, the descriptions of the food cooked in this book will absolutely make you want to whip on an apron and get cooking. So so good.
A book I would highly recommend.
