Such a beautiful book!
This was another beautiful book, with a beautiful cover, by Elizabeth Acevedo. I finished this book in two days because I just couldn't put it down. It was such a lovely story and the writing was so stunning, all my senses and emotions were piqued in this book.
I fell in love with the character of Emoni and you can't help but feel proud of her the whole way through, I was definitely her number one cheerleader! I felt so motherly towards her, watching her juggle school, a job and her toddler daughter I just wanted to step in and help her but I was also always so confident in her ability to do all these things with grace.
The book was rich and vibrant and I felt like I could smell and taste every dish that Emoni prepared. It was pure escapism and definitely warmed my heart. I loved that each section started with a recipe and it was a great little added extra.
I definitely recommend this book, it's such a feel good story that is not only relatable but also bold and insightful. It doesn't shy away from the hardships of life; the consequences of teen pregnancy, grief over a dead loved one, feelings of abandonment from her father and also the tentative, tricky relationships you go through as a teenager. Despite everything that Emoni goes through though it is such a heartwarming read. Definitely one of my new favourite authors.
