I haven’t read any of David Jackson’s previous books. The book has a good pace, the short chapters are punchy and I am intrigued. Why has this happened? What’s is the back story to this scene? I really want to know … buttttt I found the emotional presentation of some of the characters stereotypical.

The main character plays ‘the good woman’ trope of being completely available and attentive to every need of her distant, unavailable, husband. There is clearly more to this and both have a back story but this could have be written with her, quite rightly, being p***ed at him for his bad treatment of her and her still being present at the right time and place. This was closely followed by the female DCI having to insist a clearly emotionally disturbed DS Cody (the guy this series centres on) must attend psychological sessions to become fit for duty. He insists he doesn’t whilst knowing full he does and freaking out about it. Maybe this will all be unpacked, maybe the story and characters will develop and grow, if so this could be a very good book that leans away from the sterotypes and is all the better for it.

So overall:
– Story good
– Men stereotypically emotionally stunted
– Women stereotypically having to emotionally tidy up after them even in professional relationships….

I’d love to read the rest of this story but I’d be hoping the whole way for some significant development from the main characters.
