This is the fourth book in the DS Nathan Cody series, but it can be read as a standalone novel - which is how I read it. The writer provides enough information about what has gone before for you to get an idea of the backstory.
DS Nathan Cody hasn't had the easiest of times and has been through some pretty traumatic stuff in his career, so when he arrives at the scene of a particularly grisly murder, his boss stops him from viewing the crime scene, and sends him off to carry out other tasks. However, he become increasingly distracted by memories of and phone calls and messages from the clowns that were responsible for torturing him and murdering a colleague in a previous book.
The wife of the murder victim, Sara Prior, receives a cryptic phone message from her husband just before he is attacked and takes it upon herself to investigate what it means.
The book switches between Sara and Cody's storylines. It reaches quite a swift conclusion and leaves much left unresolved, but being part of a series this is to be expected.
I haven't read any David Jackson novels before, but on the strength of this one I will be working my way through his earlier works at some point.....
