Hildy and Paul are taking part in a relationship study run by PHD student Jeff. Jeff is interested in whether love can be manufactured. He comes across as strange, until you realise his interest in young people's physical attractiveness is part of his discipline. An interesting discussion has already been set up - can people be manipulated to have feelings for each other, and is it ethically right, even in an academic study?

It is also interesting that Hildy and Paul have such different reasons for taking part. Paul's reason is mercenary. He wants the money. Conflict is set up right there. He goes in with the intention of taking the money and getting out when the study is over. What happens when he falls in love? What happens when someone falls in love with him?

I'm interested in the transcript format the questions and answers are presented in. I wonder how much of the book is written this way, and what this will be like as a reading experience? I think it might give us a great insight into the growing relationship between the two characters. It is like a camera trained on the couple, and their thoughts and feelings.

I love the cover. The messages on Sweethearts always seem ironically shallow, so I think it says a huge amount about the questions the participants will ask each other.

Apparently light-hearted, I think this may have huge emotional depth.
