I haven't read any other books in this series so it's hard to tell from the first impression if this would work as a standalone in it's own right or whether it requires previous knowledge and does lots of referring back which puts newcomers at a disadvantage.
The plot sounds great though - definitely something I'd pick up and choose for myself!
