This was a fast-paced read, that starts with a bizarre situation to draw the reader in. From there, the book dives straight into the action, with a shocking shooting. Selma as a narrator does not give much away to begin with, reflecting her shock and horror at the shooting. However, there are clues and red herrings galore as the book continues. The tension is increased by the unsettling traces left for Selma in her home. I loved how this gave the reader an eerie feeling.

As a character, Selma is well developed and authentic. I enjoyed how this book explored her family situation and the pressures of this. I haven't read book two in this series, but I don't think it was necessary to do so to understand this one. I was a bit confused with the political aspects of the book, but enjoyed when the author gave more detail into this. Overall, this was a fast-paced and tense read.
