I decided to read this as the crimes Graham Young where committed very close to my home town. In fact my grandfather remembers working close to where Young worked and carried out his poison obsession. The method of murder, poison is a rare occurrence especially for a serial killer. The callous way he describes the suffering of his victims and how he views them as no more than guinea pigs is shocking.
It is sad to read how it takes such events as outlined in the book (deaths and suffering that could have been avoided) in order to bring changes in procedure for the release of psychiatric patients. Equally it shows how sometimes the system fails and the most cunning criminal can fool people into seeing what they want to see to get their way. It does make you wonder if he had been found guilty of murdering his stepmother via poisoning whether he would have been released regardless his young age at the time of the offence.
