This is not the kind of novel I would usually read, but regardless found it interesting, and easy reading, as the dialogue flows very naturally.

It is a typical saga, spanning the two World Wars, featuring a family and observing the development of Kate and her business and the obstacles she has to face over the years. It is extremely evocative of its era, and is peopled with believable characters. I didn't find Kate herself particularly likeable, but feel she is symbolic of the way women had to be strong in these circumstances..

It will appeal to readers who enjoy reading novels by similar authors, I think they will find it enjoyable, moving, enlightening and historically accurate about the issues that the residents of a Scottish town had to deal with.
