After She’s Gone is a dark and gritty Scandi-noir novel full of plot twists and drama.

When I read the synopsis for this book I was intrigued by the idea of a criminal profiler with all the answers to solve a crime, if only her dementia wasn’t preventing her from remembering them and whilst the story was interesting and unique is was slow to get going. I found the second half of book much better paced than the first half and the action picked up as we began to learn more about the characters and the crimes.

I did expect to read most of this book from Hanne’s point of view but actually the story was mainly told from the points of view of Jake (a local boy who picks up Hanne’s diary in the woods) and Malin (a police officer and colleague of Hanne’s who was born and raised in Ormberg).

Although I found this book to be slow and repetitive in parts, I did enjoy the atmospheric and descriptive prose used by the author to portray how bleak yet beautiful this small rural town in Sweden was.

Although the characters are well written, I did not find them particularly likeable and formed no attachments to any of them other than Jake and Saga, who I thought were brilliant.

Overall this book was an ok read for me, one that I enjoyed in parts but wasn’t blown away by. It was rescued by the totally unexpected twist at the end that I did not see coming however.
