A pacey start to an intriguing novel. Packed with characters - the young boy who lost his mum at a young age, whose father is struggling to parent alone dresses up in his mum’s glittery dresses. Is he a girl trapped in a boys body, does he just miss his mum, or is this behaviour coming from the bullying at school and he dresses in pretty dressed as it makes him feel beautiful?

I wondered initially if this were a ghost story, with the initial chapter hinting at ghosts in the wood and the discovery of a corpse.

A policeman is then found coming out of the woods by the boy in the glittery dress, she can’t remember anything, but her brown book - left in the undergrowth may hold secrets. Did the boy pick it up? Will he be identified?

What happened to that corpse found in the wood by the youngsters drinking one night, eight years ago? Did the report it? Is there now a skeleton and this triggers an investigation?

So many questions pushes the reader onward and makes this a fast-paced thriller.

The author changes view point throughout, switching from Jake - the young boy in the dress, to Malin the police officer investigating the murder. She leaves each chapter on a cliff hanger and by alternating chapters between Jake and Malin you just keep reading. I devoured this ina day and really loved it. Not only is it a super thriller, it has an important message about the world we live in today and the horror of war that some are lucky to avoid and some are not.

I would really recommend this book.
