Set in a small town in Sweden this book introduces us to a mix of odd characters and centres around a cold case murder.

Hanne is a psychological profiler who along with her partner, Peter, goes to investigate the death of a five year old year.

Malin is a detective working the case and she grew up in the town where the investigation is taking place and has returned there to try and solve the case. She doesn't hold fond memories of her former home town and is eager to get some resolution so she can leave and return to her fiancé.

The third character the book centres on is Jake, a troubled teenager and all three of the main protagonists have secrets they hold close to their chest.

Hanne is battling the onset of dementia and writes a journal to help her to keep track of her daily movements to ensure she doesn't forget anything.

When Jake finds her wandering in the woods he wants to help her but doesn't want to be seen by anyone so when a car approaches he leaves her, but finds a sodden book she dropped and picks it up to examine at his leisure.

As the cold case is being investigated, another body is discovered and Malin, Hanne and Jake must somehow put the pieces together and between them, discover long held secrets.

The book held my attention throughout as it weaved between the three of them and the story unfolded. It was atmospheric and I almost felt I was there with them.

The story will stay with you long after the last page is turned.
