This is the first book I've read by this author and a genre I don't very often read. I enjoyed the writing and the story and I think it's set up the next book brilliantly.
I really like the cover. I like that its dark it makes the title stand out as the writing is done in gold and white with the ring being the centre feature. This was, to me, eye-catching and peaked my interest.
I love that this has a map in the front with the main players names and a crest, this I felt helped throughout the book as each chapter has the featured characters name and crest. It's written in first person from that particular character.
I have given this 3 stars as I did enjoy the start to this series and would read the next book when it's out but for me it was at times slow reading even with the short chapters and it centres on the politics etc. It can also be pretty graphic( which I expected but did at points skim over). It took a bit of time to get used to the switch of each chapter being a different voice and where each person was in the story and the secondary characters around them. I think further reading of the series however you'd get used to this.
It also has a character list at the back which tells you who is who and if they're fictional within the story.
