The writing in this book is exquisite. It makes the ancient world come to life with such clarity that at times it is uncomfortable to read.
Alexander is dead and rather than name an heir he allows there to be confusion which leads to his title of The Great, being untouched. Chaos ensues as the 7 bodyguards, as well as a secretary and several vengeful women join the fray to claim power.
Fabbri’s storytelling is compelling, leading us, through various character’s voices, through the fractured world that Alexander has left behind. The brutality of this world is laid bare: the constant battles and life or death choices to be made, the raping and pillaging that are common place and the religious rituals and beliefs are all brought to life on the page.
