what can i say? ive literally just finished reading this book and i’m at a complete loss for words. damn.

this story is set on a spaceship on a one way trip to mars, carrying six boys and six girls and enough supplies to keep them alive for five months until they reach the red planet. every day, one person gets to pick someone from the opposite gender to talk to, get to know, or fall in love with in six minutes. because as soon as they land, they’re getting married and will become the first people to live on mars.

let’s start from the beginning. the first few chapters (plus that cover!) drew me right in. i loved the unique concept of the book. i loved that the characters came from across the globe. i loved the little diagrams that went right along with the story.

there were so many twists and turns throughout this book and this definitely fuelled my enthusiasm for the plot whilst reading it. when you think things cannot get more complicated, they do. though there were many loose ends, i think this book concluded well but on a HUGE cliffhanger; there are so many things that can be resolved and examined further in the next books and i’m so excited to get some more answers from them.

our main character is leonor, a french 18 year old. one thing i loved about this book was its diversity and empowerment: the whole cast comes from places all over the world, there is a disabled character, everyone’s equal, and people have come back stronger from things that happened to them in the past. it’s wonderful.

unfortunately the pace slowed down a little after the first few chapters, but it did eventually pick back up and i found myself racing to the end. that, the fact that there was more showing than telling (mostly through speech), and that i couldn’t connect with the main character because she is so detached and didn’t really act her age, were the only things that held this book back. i feel like it was a missed opportunity going into leonor’s past and learning more about the other girls’ backstories, though hopefully they’ll be explored in later books.

on the whole, this book was amazing. the next instalments have so much potential and i can’t wait to read them!
