Ascension first drew me in by the interesting concept of a dating show in space- once which I hadn't heard before.
The lay-out of the story also furthered the plot, by opting to segment it by time, date, and planet location.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the novel (and have since gone onto purchase the two further books in the trilogy) , I found that the theme had to be explained in great detail for the reader to grasp. Instead of using his clear talent to use description to introduce scenes, Dixen instead chose to insert illustrations; whilst this was delightful, to have a physical representation of parts of the story, it would have been even better alongside a dialogue, rather than just placed within the book.

The diversity within the characters, and the humanity added to the plots villains made this piece of fiction feel relevant in todays society, whilst still marvelling with its fictional elements. Dixen allowed the reader to have time with each character, which in turn allowed us to understand their motivations for their behaviours and actions.
Reminiscent of franchise such as "Divergent" and "The Hunger Games", I feel this book has great potential to entice the younger generation to fall in love with reading and thus recommend this book!
