Ascension presents a fresh concept, essentially about speed dating in space while on the way to Mars to start the first human colony.
Multiple narrative points of view allow all aspects of the story to be known, from the participants, to the viewers, to the creators. Which provides for and all access narrative plot.
I must admit that at times there were unnecessarily long descriptive and scene setting sections which I felt slowed the pace of the book. However once I got used the the style of writing and past these sections I read the entire book within a day, due to its ease to read.
One large aspect that I felt sabotaged the book’s potential to keep me further gripped was that the main threat was revealed much to early on in the plot. As a reader I straight away knew roughly where the plot was heading far too early, and so the aspect of the threat reveal was lost. Despite this I feel that ending was still satisfying regardless of this.
Overall the concept is refreshing to read, and the ending has me gripped and ready to read the next book.
