The beginning of this story is so intriguing - the child perspective means that the reader picks up on a lot of things that the main character does not, for example the imminent threat of the war which she seems to be oblivious to, tucked away in her own world of reading. The way each chapter starts with a historical quote or statement is really clever because during the chapter, a subtle reference is made to it, adding to the complexity of the story. WW2 stories have a lot to live up to, since there are so many of them, and as someone who was thoroughly gripped by books such as the Tattooist of Auschwitz, I found this book a really compelling read, which I would love to finish, particularly as the experience of Belgians in WW2 is rarely written about.
