I was hooked from the first line, 'Terror. Pandemonium. Panic.'

The prologue unashamedly drops you straight into the jaws of the monster that is WWII with people fleeing for their lives in the midst of a German attack on Brussels.
Despite the horrors that our female protaganist is witnessing in her bid to flee, the scene is so beautifully written and described that I felt transported there.

The first few chapters start to tell Simone's story through the relationship with her father a Major General in the Belgium army and the blossoming friendship with a jewish girl named Hava who loves opera.

I am fascinated by the human stories in the midst of tragedy and war and from what I have read so far this book is going to be a rollercoaster of emotions as you follow the friendship of Simone & Hava and how the war divides them.
