First, let me point out that what I have liked the most about what I have read so far is how the story is told from the point of view of a teenage girl, but in no point, her thinking is over-simplified. Her thoughts are not repetitive or just incoherent, as too often stories about young children/teenagers are represented when told in the first person.

I read this, very much against my first impression, being honest (and a little bit too blunt) I have read enough about world war 2. I feel like most points of view have been put into the written word already. I feel like we all understand the impotence and the tragedy of the genocide, of being treated differently for a race or a religion. And wonderful pieces of art have already have come out of it... And I do feel like continuing using this terrible period for the purpose of selling, may misrepresent and trivialize what happened
So I was not wild about another novel about the friendship between two girls in the midst of this tragedy, two girls who cannot begin to comprehend why that would be the case, when for all they know they both are as good as each other.

HOWEVER, having said that, I feel like if a novel on the topic is going to be written, I'd like it to cover a different side, or country as much as possible and contain some history fragments as much as possible. Both good points for the author who discusses the Belgian population, already in the middle of the cultural dutch-french flemish cultural mingling.
So with all being considering, I am pleasantly surprised by the story and it does look really good and worth a read.. so I guess if I am going to read another novel about this topic.. this may just be worth enough to be it!
