The opening scene is dramatic and I suspect sets the mood for what will be at times a harrowing read. I've read a few books set in this period of history with a similar theme of friendship tested by events and political ideology. I'm not sure how much new the author can bring to the subject although the fact some of it is based on actual events is interesting.
