Great opening and choice of setting, unsure of wider arc

A very evocative and well described opening few lines, I immediately felt like I was in that panicked crowd with the protagonist, a brilliant opening.

I am very interested by the setting of this novel, Belgium during WW2 is something I know very little about, and as the author says in his opening notes, the connections he has to the people and country at this time, lend if not credence but a further sense of realism to the tale.

I'll admit from the blurb I really wasn't sure this would be my thing, seeming a bit too much like a cliche'd lovers separated by war will they find each other again?

But this opening and the way the author is already showing the callousness and horrors of war, along with a real sense of depth and history, has made me re-evaluate it a tad.
I can't promise I'll enjoy this story, but with the scene that has been set and the writing style I'm prepared to give it a chance.
