The novel starts with a scene as Germany invades Brussels during the second World war and a girl tries to escape. In then goes back a few years when the girl lives in Belgium between the world wars. She is the daughter of a Belgian war hero from World War 1 but is not aware of what is happening in real life. She befriends a Jewish girl from Poland. The main character is very likeable and I am interested in reading to find out what happens.
