The opening sentence of the prologue was enough to convince me that I need to read this story!

I think I've never read such a powerful opening sentence in a prologue! It immediately transported me to the streets of Brussels and made me feel that I was experiencing the fear and panic which was gripping everyone. The following five chapters were equally powerful, drawing me into what I know is a story which although I know it will be heartbreaking and disturbing, is one I know I just have to read.
The disturbing, chilling quotes at the start of each chapter serve as a reminder of just how dark this period in European history was and I'm sure that their significance will add layers of depth the developing tension. I'm equally convinced that the fact that the novel is inspired by true events will contribute to the authenticity of the story-telling.
I haven't read any of this author's previous books or essays but the eloquence of his writing in "Ashes" makes me think I've been missing out!
