Ashes tells the story of Simone, the 18 year old daughter of a Belgian war hero. At the time of war breaking out the most important thing in Simone’s life is her best friend Hava. However soon Simone and Hava find themselves running away from Nazis and everything they have ever known.
Whilst there are plenty of other books of this genre out there the difference I found in this novel was the way it captured the naivety of the young girls, how little they knew of the danger they were in. You really felt for them.
Whilst I didn’t love the book, it was a quick read and really captured the essence of the time. I think it’s so important that we don’t forget about the lives that were lost during the wars and books such as these are a fantastic way to keep the memories alive.
