I did enjoy this book, it tells the tale of two girls (one Jewish) in war torn Belgium. It is a work of fiction but loosely based on the experiences of the author's grandfather. It gives a vivid picture of Belgium at this time. I found it easy to read and quite "unputdownable".
The chapters are very short, but each begins with a quotation or fact relevant to the story, I found this informative and it added to my interest in the book.
I think that that this book would suit young adult readers particularly those studying world war 2 for G.C.S.E. history .
My main criticism is that the main characters do seem very immature, they are 18 at the beginning of the war but seem much younger, they are not streetwise and to appear to be dependent on other people, mainly strangers to rescue them, this makes the novel seem a slightly unrealistic.
