All wars leave devastation and heartbreak and this novel tells the story of Simone and her friend Hava who live in Belgium during World War 2. Simone is the daughter of a war hero from WW1 and Hava is the daughter of a Jewish family.

Although their backgrounds are poles apart their friendship is strong. Most Belgium citizens believe they will be safe from the terrors of war bit that soon changes with the imminent arrival of the German army. Simone’s father father is called away leaving her afraid and alone in her home. Hava reaches out the hand of friendship at the expense of remaining with her own family who seem to have disappeared.

The two girls set off on a quest to escape the invasion which sees them experience many Terrifying moments.

I loved the authors quotes which enriched the storyline and gave a real insight into the events surround WW2.

This harrowing story highlighted the terrors of war. All people In war suffer and this was explored thoughtfully. I grew very attached to the two main characters and was rooting for their friendship and love to prevail.

This book made me grateful for the sacrifices our forefathers gave so that we could experience freedom. We must learn from the evil of the past and never forget how others suffered needlessly. Read Simone and Hava’s story and be reminded that even in the most horrific times dignity, love and friendship can prevail.
