I only read a portion of this book as a 'first impression', but what I read I did enjoy.
This seems like a great example of the historical fiction genre, based on real people/characters from diaries from the time, but elaborated on/embellished to ensure the story around the specific girls is interesting and engaging.
Obviously I don't know the full story as I only read a preview, but the friendship between the two main female characters shines through from the start, and I would like to read more of their story.
I liked the reflections from Simone about her father, and Hitler, and the things that happened that she struggles to understand. Her thoughts about the book burnings and trying to make sense of how that could have happened, as it doesn't marry with the Belgium that she feels she knows, is realistically representative of a lot of younger people trying to rationalise their own families and history.
I would definitely like to read more of this book.
