They say you should never judge a book by its cover and this is certainly true here. I glanced past this book when it was first released thinking it wouldn't be for me. I was quite wrong. There is so much in this novel, the terrible treatment of the Jewish people during WW2, the themes of friendship and national identity.

At the beginning of each chapter is a historical excerpt from texts of the time which are very thought provoking. What is effortlessly conveyed is the growing relationship between Simone and Hava. This is charmingly written.

The novel also provides a lovely sense of place. The cityscape at the beginning of the novel is conveyed through sensory detail.

I recommend this highly.
