I enjoyed Blood in the Dust far more than I expected to. It is a fast paced adventure story based in the Australian gold fields in 1853. For a first novel it flows extremely well, nicely written with well rounded characters.
It starts with two brothers chasing a dingo who had been stealing their mother’s chickens then swiftly continues with the boys being orphaned by bushwhackers then losing their small holding to a greedy rancher. Going to the gold fields they help an English family with little idea of how to survive in Australia soon joining forces with them in mutual aid.
I think this novel will be enjoyed by a wider audience than those who regularly read this genre. I can recommend this book without hesitation.
