Cassie is an interesting heroine. She works as a mortuary assistant and believes that she can hear the dead. The opening of the novel shows her finding out the reason why a woman died (allergy to hair dye) while the posh pathologist hasn't got a clue. Cassie is the opposite of posh. She was orphaned when young and was brought up by her grandmother in a council flat. She left home as soon as she could and lived in a series of squats absorbing the counter-culture.
All in all this was a very interesting opening to the novel and I would love to read more.
