Body Language by AK Turner is the story of Cassie, a mortuary technician, and goth, in her twenties who has a fascination with all dead people and animals perhaps stemming from her parents death in a car crash when she was only four. The author first tells her readers about Cassie and a post mortem when she feels she can hear the dead woman saying she can't breathe. Cassie often experiences these messages but do they really come from the dead or is there something about the appearance of the body that gives her information? Cassie was brought up by her grandmother and didn't do well at school choosing to leave and move into a squat however while selling The Big Issue she is befriended by a science teacher. Cassie takes classes and achieves excellent results making her grandmother think she should train as a pathologist. Cassie's grandmother also supports Cassie's new hobby of taxidermy and give her a dead squirrel to work on. This is a very original and book and a fascinating insight into the work carried out in mortuaries.
